Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, also known as simply KU, is an American public university located in Kutztown, which is a borough in Berks County, in the US state of Pennsylvania, with a population estimated at a number of little over 5000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, situated 18 miles southwest of Allentown and 17 miles northeast of Reading.
Kutztown University was established in 1866 and it is one of the 14 schools that comprise the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. After having its name changed several times, over the years, the institution finally adopted its current name in 1983, after being known for more than 20 years as Kutztown State College.
Today, the university offers its students, who number approximately 10 000, undergraduate and graduate programs, in areas such as liberal arts and sciences, visual and performing arts, or education.
Kutztown's athletic teams are known as the Golden Bears, which compete in 8 sports for men and 13 for women, in NCAA Division II's PSAC. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gold.
